What is Varicella vaccine

Varicella is a fairly heavy burden infectious diseases for children. For healthy children, the symptoms are generally light. However, there are also severe cases. Children under influence of acute leukemia, malignant tumors or immunosuppressive agent tends to be severe and abnormal course may lead to death.

There could be cases if the disease gets worse it may result in systemic varicella.

Similarly, nephrotic syndrome patients using steroids in large amount or children with congenital immune disorder suffering from Varicella can lead to dangerous symptoms and could be fatal.

If varicella blisters are scratched badly, it may cause a secondary infection and causes cured scars. There are rare cases of Reye’s syndrome after varicella infection.

Varicella vaccination to healthy children for its advantage, varicella vaccination was approved in the United States and Europe in 1995 and are spreading worldwide. In the United States, varicella vaccination is included in all children program.

Safety and Quality of BIKEN vaccines

Biological medicinal products differ from chemical drugs in that they cannot normally be characterized molecularly; starting methods such as bacteria, viruses, or genetically modified micro-organisms are of enormous complexity, as well as having the capacity to vary from preparation to preparation. A certain amount of these products, such as vaccines against transmissible disease, are also administered to healthy individuals — often children at the start of their lives, and thus a strong emphasis must be placed on their quality to ensure, to the greatest extent possible, that they are efficacious in preventing or treating life-threatening disease, without themselves causing harm. Course on vaccine quality control technology was organized by WHO at the Research Foundation for Microbial Diseases of Osaka University (BIKEN), Japan

Safety of the BIKEN varicella vaccine

Freeze-dried Live Attenuated Varicella Vaccine

The vaccine was developed in Japan by BIKEN. “Oka strain live attenuated vaccines” currently used in the world is highly evaluated for its efficacy and safety. It was originally developed for the purpose of preventing infection from varicella for children with nephrotic syndrome and leukemia under steroid therapy. For this background, BIKEN varicella vaccine was developed with thorough consideration of safety.Following varicella infection, the virus remains latent in neural ganglia and in about 10-20% of cases it is reactivated to cause herpes zoster, or shingles, generally in persons over 50 years of age or immunocompromised individuals. It is said that there is no magical cure to this painful disease that could cause permanent damage to the nerves or visual impairment. BIKEN Varicella Vaccine is now approved for adults Herpes Zoster.

Side effects due to varicella vaccination currently being manufactured by BIKEN, Japan is considered to be very rare in healthy individuals.

〈Ground for statement1 Safety of this vaccine is proven by evidence from over 100 million vaccinations in 25 years in Japan and more than 15 years in various countries, that side reaction is very low.
